Overview
The 9-day Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro’s longest, most gradual, and most successful route. It begins with the scenic Lemosho trail on the mountain’s western flank before branching off to traverse the remote and spectacular northern slopes. This extended itinerary provides unparalleled acclimatization by spending multiple days at high altitude while circumnavigating Kibo Peak. The route culminates in the summit ascent from the quieter northeastern side via School Hut, offering a truly exclusive and wilderness-rich experience away from the main trails.
Top Highlights
- Highest Success Rate: The 9-day duration is the key to its exceptional success (often over 95%). The extended, gradual ascent and multiple acclimatization days, including a night at Moir Hut (4,200m) and traversing the northern slopes, give your body the best possible chance to adapt to the altitude.
- Ultimate Wilderness & Solitude: After joining the initial Lemosho path, the route diverges to the remote northern slopes, an area traversed by very few trekkers. This offers a profound sense of solitude and untouched beauty, with opportunities to see wildlife like eland.
- Complete Panoramic Journey: This route provides 360-degree views of Kilimanjaro. You see the mountain from the west (Shira Plateau), the north (remote valleys), and the east (during the summit push), offering a more complete perspective than any other route.
- Superior Acclimatization: The itinerary is meticulously designed for acclimatization, featuring the classic "climb high, sleep low" day to Lava Tower (4,600m) and a long, high traverse across the northern side, which is optimal for adapting to the altitude before the summit push.
- Unique & Exclusive Camps: The route stays at less-frequented camps like Moir Hut and Buffalo Camp, ensuring a peaceful experience. The summit is approached from the northeast via School Hut, which is less crowded than the more popular Barafu Camp.
